Series of webinars will be offered by IEEE 5G Initiative around the globe to both IEEE members and non-members. The objective of the IEEE 5G Webinar Series is to expand the understanding of 5G and its implications to the society and economy.

5G: What is it and What New Applications are Driving Its Formation?

Abstract: Cellular systems are growing into their fifth generation (5G). Trials of 5G technologies are already underway and extensive deployments of 5G are expected in the coming years. In this webinar, I explain several new revolutionary applications of cellular communication, which place new requirements on the design of 5G. These applications involve vehicular- and aerial-to-everything communications for mobile robots, or ultra-reliable, low rate communications in the context of IoT. Then I describe different technical elements of 5G enabling these new applications. Some examples of these technologies are massive MIMO, millimeter wave communication, or network slicing. Finally, I categorize these technologies based on how much they disrupt 4G thinking.

Robert W. Heath Jr. is a Cullen Trust for Higher Education Endowed Professor in the Department of ECE at The University of Texas at Austin, and Director of UT SAVES. He authored  “Introduction to Wireless Digital Communication” (Prentice Hall in 2017) and “Digital Wireless Communication: Physical Layer Exploration Lab Using the NI USRP” (National Technology and Science Press in 2012). He co-authored “Millimeter Wave Wireless Communications” (Prentice Hall in 2014). He is a licensed Amateur Radio Operator, a registered Professional Engineer in Texas, a Private Pilot, recipient of the 2017 EURASIP Technical Achievement Award, and is a Fellow of the IEEE.

A Look at the Companies and Organizations Working to make 5G a Commercial Success

Abstract: Ecosystem is everything when it comes to mobile. Without a robust ecosystem wireless standards rarely have commercial success. This webinar examines some of the key players in the ecosystem working to make 5G a success. Ecosystem review will include operator deployment plans, standards development and the groups behind those developments, and key vendor activity.

Daryl Schoolar covers the wireless infrastructure space at Ovum, with a primary focus on market activities as they apply to the radio access network (RAN). RAN coverage includes macro-, micro-, and picocell solutions for CDMA EVDO, HSPA/HSPA+, LTE (TDD and FDD), LTE-Advanced and 5G. Daryl’s research includes not only what infrastructure vendors are developing, but also how mobile operators are deploying and using these wireless network solutions.

As an industry analyst Daryl has been involved in such projects as helping technology vendors develop use cases for new products and services, identifying new technology trends, and providing market sizing and market share support. He regularly speaks at industry and vendor events on trends impacting the wireless infrastructure market. He is also sought out by trade publications to comment on mergers and acquisitions, new product announcements, and market developments as they relates to his coverage area.  Daryl brings over 16 years of industry analyst experience to Ovum. Prior to joining Ovum in September of 2011 he held similar positions with Current Analysis and In-Stat. Before becoming an industry analyst, Daryl worked at telecommunications service provider Cable & Wireless USA, where he was a member of the marketing and competitive intelligence team.  Daryl has a bachelor of science in Marketing Management from Virginia Tech.
